Celebrating over 45 Years in Business
In 1974 Our Commitment to the Sound System Industry Begins.
Build products that are Durable, Easy to Install, and Simple To Operate.
KDM was registered as a proprietorship in 1974 and incorporated in 1976. After being located at 705 Progress Ave for 18 years, the company has grown and moved twice to gain much needed additional manufacturing space.
Ron Bull founded KDM Electronics Incorporated to design and manufacture central speaker clusters and electronic modules. These products would provide custom configurable sound systems for Recreational Facilities (Hockey and Figure Skating Arenas, Gymnasiums, Community Halls, Swimming Pools, etc.).
The core business model and goal was to make products that are flexible, easy to operate, and capable of producing voice and music quality not normally found in these types of facilities. A criteria that is still the foundation for KDM’s success today.
Ron’s son Martin Bull, began working at KDM in 1990. “Early in my career we would design the system, manufacture and assemble all the components in house, and then drive to the facility to install. I learned, start to finish, all the nuances involved with sound systems and use this knowledge for new product designs today. My design criteria is the same as my father’s. It has to be durable, easy to install and simple to operate.
1990’s KDM Enters The Digital Age – Who should own your sound system? You or the manufacturer?
Years ago when the commercial sound industry began to move quickly into the digital realm, KDM/Octasound had a big decisions to make. The industry was switching to digital.
Martin Bull had this to say about the digitization of audio products. “As a system designer and product designer I had to explore moving the Octasound product line into a computer / software environment. As a computer enthusiast I kept thinking about how many times I’ve upgraded operating systems or thrown out good components just because driver support ended. The computer industry is a throw away industry. Did we really want audio products mimicking the wasteful computer industry? Did we want to make sound systems that we, the manufacturer, decides on a customer’s sound system life cycle? Do we want to make a switch and volume control so complex it requires specific installer and customer training?
No! This digital realm for our designs are completely unnecessary and goes against our design philosophy. “Make it Durable, Easy to Install and Simple To Operate.”
To this day our new designs have achieved that.
